The Student Experience
During RootEd projects and challenges, students make creative products that benefit real people and places while learning course content and community problem solving.
What will students learn?
The Board Game Design project integrates with lots of different content areas, grade levels, and community needs. Math is a popular subject to teach through board games, and organizing a community game night with student-made games is a great way to engage with parents and families. In the example to the right, elementary students integrated addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division into their board game. Literacy is also baked in, as students write out the rules to the game as part of this project.

How will students learn?
RootEd was founded on the belief that the best way to prepare students, schools, and communities for tomorrow, is to engage them in solving the challenges of today, right in their backyard.
Check out the sample design guide to see how students develop their community problem solving skills by working through the stages of Discovery, Development, Delivery, and Documentation on their way to a finished product they can be proud of.

The Teacher Experience
Turn your classroom into a problem-solving studio that’s RootEd in Community.

We work with teachers across North Carolina who want to bring learning to life, prepare students for the world outside of school, and fill students with a sense of pride in their work and communities.
This is easier said than done given all the demands on teachers’ time and energy, and it’s even harder to do consistently.
That’s why we created RootEd – to make authentic learning more accessible and sustainable for all students and teachers. Our team of teaching partners and creatives work side-by-side with teachers and students, from pre-K to college, to integrate course content with community problem solving.
The Partner Experience
RootEd connects experts and organizations with classrooms to create mutually beneficial experiences and products.
RootEd showed us that there was a need, and that need aligned with McDowell County Tourism’s intent, which was to promote outdoor recreation as well as tourism. What better way than to align with RootEd.
This [project] showed me just how engaged students can be if you give them something close to home that means something to them.
